Ubuntu - Keyboard Shortcuts !


Keyboard shortcuts

Ubuntu makes use of a variety of keyboard shortcuts for quick access to built-in functions. Some of these shortcuts are similar to those found under Windows, while some are unique. See Table below for more information. Some of these shortcuts only work if desktop effects are enabled—see the Graphics Article for Ubuntu.

Key combination Details
  1. Alt+F4 = Quit application.
  2. F1 = Context-sensitive help.
  3. F10 = Open a program’s File menu; use left/right cursor keys to move between other menus.
  4. Alt+F1 = Open main menu; use left/right cursor keys to move between menus.
  5. Alt+F2 = Open “Run Application” dialog box, whereby applications can be started by typing their filenames.
  6. Alt+Tab = Switch between applications.
  7. Shift+Alt+upcursor = Switch between applications using a live preview of each window (like Mac OS’s Exposé feature).
  8. Ctrl+Alt+left/right cursor = Switch between virtual desktops.
  9. Windows+E = Switch between virtual desktops by viewing a live preview of each desktop (double-click to select).
  10. Windows+M = Invert colors on desktop (useful for partially-sighted people, or if using the computer at night).
  11. Windows+N = Invert colors in top-most program window.
  12. Ctrl+Alt+Backspace = Restart the graphical subsystem (X); should only be used in emergencies because the restart is instant and without confirmation—all data will be lost!
  13. Alt+F9 = Minimize window.
  14. Alt+F10 = Maximize window.
  15. Alt+F5 = Restore window after maximizing.
  16. Alt+F7 = Allows you to move window using cursor keys; hit Enter when done.
  17. Alt+F8 = Allows you resize window using cursor keys; hit Enter when done.
  18. PrintScreen = Take screenshot of whole desktop.
  19. Alt+PrintScreen = Take screenshot of currently active program window.
CAUTION All users on the system can access each others’ files within their /home folders on a read‐only basis.
